Lecture Notes
Lecture 1 : Introduction on Module
30/08/19 ( Week 1)

We were briefed on about the module by Dr. Jin Chi and Dr. Hayati. We went to the module outline together and we were also briefed about the proposal that we have to come up with. We had to find a topic of our interest and do a research proposal on it. The topic has to be related to the specialisation that we had to chose in the upcoming semester, because it will help us on our final project.

Lecture 2 : Academic Writing & Research
06/09/19 (Week 2)

We were told to research further more into our topics, to find a problem statement from reading articles so that you understand the problem statement of your topic. After finding a problem statement, we need research objectives and maximum 3 research questions. For the first paragraph of the problem statement, it will be an introduction to our topic, for the second paragraph it is to state the problem that you wish to solve and how. Lastly, the third paragraph of the problem statement should state on what are we going to do with the research.

Lecture 3 : Research Proposal
13/09/19 (Week 3)

There is no lecture today, we had a session with the librarian called 'Research Methodology 101" where he taught on how to use the Taylor's Library and proper way to cite the articles.

Instructions

Proposal
Week 1 - Week 4

Week 1
I had decided two topics which is "Subliminal messages in advertising" and "Cartoon Violence and Youth Aggression".  And i had also told Dr. Jin Chi about the topic.

Feedback Dr. Jin Chi told me to read more articles about the topics and research more about it.

Week 2
I decided to do "Subliminal messages in advertising" as my research topic. I had read a few articles about it the last few days.

Feedback Subliminal messages in advertising sounds more of a mass communication topic. I was advised to narrow it down and choose a type of advertisement for a product to research on. Find the graphic form of subliminal messages.Find out how subliminal messaging in graphic design works.Focus on one kind of advertisement, possibly find one product to focus on.Find out the research objectives that reflects the research problem. Dr. Jin Chi also explained on how i can do my problem statement for example paragraph 1 should include the introduction of advertisements, the second paragraph should include the topic that i'm researching on and the last paragraph should be the purpose of this research.

Week 3
I decided to change my research topic to "Typography and Advertisements". As i find it difficult for me to find more articles and research for the previous topic.

Feedback Dr. Jin Chi helped me on my research problem and decided that " The interplay between typefaces and images in advertisements." is a better research problem than my other one. Dr. Jin Chi also suggested me that i can include some visuals to support my problem statement. And i have to explain what does ineffective mean in typography in advertisements. Dr. Jin Chi also helped me with the aim of my research and rephrase it to "Study how typefaces and images work together to create an effective advertisement by looking into three case studies." I had to choose three case studies to support my research. She also corrected my grammar mistakes and gave me a few examples to further explain on how i can do my research. Last but not least, Dr. Jin Chi also helped me on my research objective, she said that my research objective has to reflect my research problem. Overall, Dr. Jin Chi helped me a lot for my proposal.

Final Proposal

Feedback
• Research Theme: Should be Design Principles
• Research Topic, Research Problem: Related to each other, Relevant to the research theme (if it’s Design Principles)
• Problem Statement: Overall quite well-written with supporting citations. Third paragraph, second sentence – be specific, avoid “some effort”. Fourth sentence – avoid repeating “thus”. Indicate what your cases of study will be and briefly justify your reasons for choosing them. • Citations: For research that has more than two authors, write (Tej, et al., 2018).
• Research Objectives, Research Questions: Sound and related to problem statement.
• References: Relevant.
