Lecture 1 : Introduction to Advanced Typography and Group Presentations about Typographic Systems
26.08.19 (Week 1)

On the first day of class, Mr.Vinod briefed us about the module and what to expect it. Our task of the day was to teach the class about the 8 typographic systems, we were divided into 4 small groups to give a presentation on the topic given. Each group was assigned to present 2 typographic systems. My group got 'Grid & Modular Systems'. Following is the presentation slides of the 8 typographic systems.

We get to have a Q&A session after every presentation, it was helpful and interesting to listen to other people's different opinion.

Lecture 2 :
02.09.19 (Week 2)
We didn't have much lectures this week in class, we were focused on showing our 8 typographic systems to Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul. Mr. Vinod then continued with explaining the next exercise which is "Type and Play : Part 1- Finding Type" and he also showed us some of our senior's work.

Lecture 3 :
09.09.19 (Week 3)
We showed our dissected letterforms for exercise "Type and Play : Part 1- Finding Type" and got our feedbacks from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul. Then, Mr. Vinod explained about the next exercise which is "Type and Play : Part 2 - Type & Image".

Lecture 4 :
16.09.19 (Week 4)
Public Holiday

Lecture 5 :
23.09.19 (Week 5)
My group had a lecture today to present about "Typographic Perception & Organisation"

Exercises

Exercises 1 : Typographic Systems & Finding
Part 1- Typographic Systems
26/08/19 ( Week 1 - Week 3)

For the first exercise of this semester, we had to create 2 layouts for each of the typographic systems in Adobe InDesign (size 200x200mm), so that is 16 layouts in total. We were only allowed to use black, white and one colour of our own choice to create our design and following with the 9 fonts that were given. We can also use graphical elements but very minimally and as long as it fits the design. Following is the details that we should include in our design.

Part 2 - Type & Play 1.0 ( Finding Type)
For this exercise, we had to find an image and try to dissect it to find 5 letterforms. After that, we had to refine it without losing the original form of the letterform found in the image. I found an image of rusty chains on Pinterest.

After tracing out all the outlines of the chains, I then proceed to find the letterforms in my tracing. These are the letterforms that i have found :

Week 4
I showed my final refinement (refinement 10) to Mr. Shamsul and Mr Vinod, Mr. Vinod said that i had refined to the point where it only looks like an ordinary stencil instead of a chain effect. They advice me to make the thickness like in "Refinement 9" or "Refinement 6". And also, Mr. Vinod advised me to make the chain look roundish instead of just a rectangle cut off.

Part 2 - Type & Play 2.0  (Type & Image)
In the second part of "Type & Play", we were assigned to find a image and interplay type with it. The text chosen must match and interplay well with the image chosen. The sentence should be 3-5 words long.

These are my first few attempts.

Final Result
After asking feedback from Mr. Vinod, he asked me to add a reflection of the text I have on the reflective floor.
Added a reflection for the text
I was unsatisfied with the result so I did another one and used another image.

Final Result
After showing Mr. Vinod & Mr. Shamsul both of my work, they prefer the first one (Rise Up), and they reminded me that I should only use a font from the 9 fonts provided. And also "The Rise Up" doesn't sound grammatically correct.

Feedback

Week 2 (02.09.19)
General Feedback Mr. Vinod told us that the body text font size should be 8 - 12 pt size. He also re-explained about the modular system, that each column and row can be replaced by others. He told use to make some grid system for every system so that we're not just winging it. Making sure that we create our work within the margins. Making our font size with 0.5 to make them even with the rest. Specific Feedback Mr Vinod said that i have no problem with my axial and transitional. For my dilatational, i was told to reduce my font size to allow more breathing space. I had to add one more point for my radial system, but overall good. For my bilateral, i was told not to split the page but overall is fine. I had to reconstruct both my grid system and modular system as i was not following any grids to create my work. I need to allow more breathing space for my random system.

Week 3 (09.09.19)
General Feedback Mr. Vinod told us that when we were dissecting and refinig the letterforms, we should keep in mind to not lose the characteristics of the object that we've dissected from. He also told us to look at the senior's blog and follow their step by step updates of the refining process. Specific Feedback The letterform " G, Q, O, J" was clear but not "P and K". Mr. Vinod said that it should not take more than a week for me to refine it and that i should speed up. Mr. Shamsul also reminded me that to not lose the chain characteristics while refining my letterform.
Week 4 (16.09.19)
Specific Feedback
Mr Vinod suggested that I add a reflection of the words to the ground as there is a reflection of the person on the ground.

Week 5 (23.09.19)
Specific Feedback

Type & Play - Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul suggested that i make my fianl refinement of the letterforms a bit thicker. Mr. Vinod said that my final refinement looks like a ordinary stencil. Image & Type - I was told to change the typeface to futura. That " The Rise Up" is grammatically wrong, instead i can use " We'll Rise Up" or "I'll Rise Up".

Reflection

Experiences

Week 1
The presentation was nerve-wrecking for me as it was my first presentation on my first day in Taylor's University. I think I could do better but words weren't coming out of my mouth as smoothly as I'd imagine it to. Overall, it was fun to learn typographic systems from my course mates and the Q&A session after every presentation helped a lot in further understanding about the different typographic systems.

Week 2
The exercise for this week was time consuming but it helped me learn a lot about Adobe Indesign cause of it. I thought i got the grid system correct but i was wrong.

Week 3
I was struggling to dissect the letterforms because they somehow look distorted to me although i have tried very hard to refine it. I am aware that i have to plan my time efficiently in order to get this and the upcoming exercise done nicely.

Week 4
Although it was a public holiday, my time was packed with assignments. I was working on both exercises at once, so thinking of ideas was difficult. I tired to refine more of my letterforms following the example that Mr.Vinod had posted on Facebook. And for the "Type & Image"  I was struggling to find a picture until I saw that some of the seniors got their image from Pexels.

Week 5
Class began with my group presenting about "Typographic Perception & Organisation". It was not as nerve-wrecking for me as compared to my last presentation. And I actually had fun learning about the topic while doing the slides.

Observations

Week 1
Everyone in class were friendly, I was nervous at first worrying about not making friends and not being able to catch up on others. But overall it was great, I was worried for nothing, everyone is helpful and especially Arletta who has helped me a lot on doing my first blog.

Week 2
It was fun to see other classmate's work and how they perceive the typographic system in a different way. I learned a lot while observing other's work and asking them for advice on how should i improve my work.

Week 3
Everyone was really focused on their work on dissecting the letterforms. More and more of my classmates are missing the class because it falls on a public holiday.

Week 4
Although we got a chance to take a break for this week, my classmates still carried on with their exercises and asked for feedbacks.

Week 5
Everyone in class were busy with both of their exercises and with the upcoming new Project 1, everyone was unsure and confused about the topic.

Findings

Week1
I found out that everyone has an e-portfolio and it is mandatory for everyone in this course to have it in order to pass. And also everyone had their laptops out, it was unusual for me as I am not allowed to do that in my previous university. The lecturer was friendly and helpful. It was a great first day experience for me.

Week 2
I found out that the grid system and modular system was not what i understood before, but after consulting Mr. Vinod about it i finally got the hang of it. I have also managed to find out how to manage my time effectively throughout the week in order to finish this exercise.

Week 3
I found out that coming to class on a Monday public holiday is really tiring.

Week 4
The public holiday helped me on catching up with the exercises because i was falling behind everyone before that.

Week 5
Time management is very important and I have to work harder and faster to catch up.
