Project 2 - Developing a Logo

21.04.2020 | Week 2
In the first week, we were introduced to the second project as well, in which we needed to come up with our own brand and have a name for it. Based on the brand name, sketch 20 logos ideas each week.

We filled in the questionnaire for project 3 and brainstormed on which brand we wanted to create. Ms Low told me that opt 3 is my strongest choice to go and that it'll be interesting. So I decided to go with opt 3 which is a brand that sells Sarawak coffee beans. And I have decided to change the name to "Kupi Sigek !"

28.04.2020 | Week 3
We were to sketch 20 logos each week till the final decision.

18.05.2020 | Week 6
This week I focused on option11 and option 17 from last week's development. I did a few variations for it and also tweaked the logos to make it look more balance.

Week 7 (30/05/2020)
After receiving feedbacks, I refined the strokes of the logo and finalised it this week.

Feedbacks

Week 3
Individual feedback: Ms Low said that my brand has a casual and approachable personality. As for the logo sketches, she said that the hand gesture is cute and suitable for my brand name, and also the speech bubble. She also allowed me to chose a logo that I would like to venture more into. She suggested that i can explore more on the charcoal texture instead of the smooth rounded lines. For my next 20 sketches, it should be in black & white.

Week 4
Individual feedback: For the logos, 10,11,12 looks kiddish and it's not suitable for my brand. I can further develop my hand gesture(16,17,18) and find something interesting out of it. Option 13 looks ordinary, option 14 is hard to read. Ms Low suggested that i try to combine opt 16,17,18, and maybe it can be made into different variation (eg. Fjallraven Kanken store front and logo). Different variation as in different expressions and faces, as the hand gesture in my logo looks like a face. For next week, I can try to add in different fonts to it.

Week 5
Individual feedback: opt 17 looks more pictorial compared opt 16 because of the eyes, and the eyebrows adds a cute touch to it. But Ms Low said that it is up to me to decide if I want to include the eyebrows or not. For opt 11, the strokes for the eyes is smaller compared to the mouth, it can be tweaked. Maybe in the future I can animate the eyes also to make it more interesting. For the  fonts try to use or modify it to rounded corners and explore more. And also the typeface should be labeled when showing progress. For further developments for next week I should further develop opt 17, opt 11, and choose one more design

Week 6
Individual feedback: The variations looks good, the one with the eyebrows looks nicer than the other ones. The weight of the mouth seems heavier than the eyes, maybe try to reduce that and tweak it.

Week 7
Individual feedback:   reduce the size of the text so that it doesn't look heavy with the logo.

Reflection
Experiences

It was fun coming up with a brand idea, many interesting ideas popped up in my head and I can already sort of imagine the visuals. Sketching all 20 logos in a sitting just doesn't work for me, because most of them will just end up looking similar. So I've decided to divide the task into 5-7 sketches a day.

Observations

I observed that my friends have interesting brand ideas too. I observed that sketching the logos in chunk gave me a clearer direction on what kind of logo I lean more towards to.

Findings

I found out that coming with a brand idea is not easy and it is important that a brand contributes back to the society. I found out that the art direction of the logo indicates the type of brand you are going towards.
