Type Specimen Sheet

27.05.2020 | Week 7
After the content was generated, the next step was to create sample sheet type. This was to see body text, title, half title, subtext, pull quotes in different types.

Type Specimen Sheet

Chosen type for the book was:
Heading: Benguiat Pro ITC / 18pt
Body text: Univers LT Std / 9pt
Pull-quote: Roc Grotesk / 92pt
Sub-text: Univers LT Std Oblique/ 7pt

After that, we started on our layout. Mr Vinod told us to work on it from our half title to Chapter 1 while experimenting with at least three different grid systems. Mr Vinod told us to look at references to have a rough idea.

I prepared 2 layouts this week for progression.

After consulting with Mr Vinod, he gave me a suggestion for different layout.

Post Intervention by Mr Vinod:

10.06.2020 | Week 9

For the book cover I've decided to go for a clean and simple style. I've included a cropped picture of my mother in a sitting position, she was sitting on a chair in the original photo. I edited the colour of the photo to a blueish tone to match the whole theme of my book. And also, I've duplicated it and give it a pink tone and halftone effect. I've also included the rectangular shape to imitate a chair and the table that she's leaning on.

Feedbacks

Week 7
Individual Feedback : Lecture slides should be embbed instead of the youtube video in the lecture notes section of the blog.

Week 8
Individual Feedback : Mr Vinod helped me with the layouts and fixed most of my problems. It really helped in setting a guide for me to follow.

Week 9
Individual Feedback : The book cover should not be simple, it must be eye catching for others to attract attention. Page numbers come after content page. Ava dont need to say this.. "Layout by Mr Vinod :"You can say "Post intervention by Mr. Vinod" Why aren't you following the student reference I provided? You need to upload the JPEG of your spreads (ensure there is an outline). JPG and PDF of thumbnails. Upload book to ISSU. Simulate 3-D book. Eportfolio seems a little light, without much elaboration or description.

Reflections

Experience

Week 7: This week we started designing our layouts from the half-titles to the end of chapter 1.

Week 8: I focused on reworking and perfecting my chapter 1 layout based on what was taught in class and the exercises, then only proceeded to do the rest.

Week 9: This week my layout was good to go after some minor adjustments. I only added colour and made sure everything looks good.

Observation

Week 7: This week was a bad week for all of us as Mr. Vinod was disappointed. Our work wasn't done well and it did not reflect all the things that we learned.

Week 8: I noticed that my layouts lack variation and surprise although it is now consistent.

Week 9: After playing around with the size and placement of the image, I noticed that my layout has started to have more variation.

Findings

Week 7: It was my first time designing a book layout and I find it challenging because even though it was supposed to be similar to the form and movement exercise, it felt different for me and it was hard to find that same flow again.

Week 8: I realize that I have to keep introducing surprise factors in each spread to keep the surprise level going, but my visuals are kind of fixed, with roughly the same size and treatment. Hence, I need to think of other ways.

Week 9: Having to finally finish the official book design makes me happy as I am able to see the whole thing in its glory, started from nothing to writing our content, and to see the visuals working with the text to produce a book feels satisfying, but I'm not fully satisfied frankly, I felt that my visuals could do better in having more variation

Title: Making and Breaking the Grid : A Graphic Design Layout Workshop
Author: Samara, Timothy.

All design work involves problem solving on both visual and organizational levels. Pictures and symbols, fields of text, headlines, tabular data, all these pieces must come together to communicate as a totality. A grid is one approach to doing so. Before anything else, a grid introduces systematic order to a layout. Not only does it distinguish different types of information, easing a user’s navigation through them but, just as importantly, it  alsoensures vital cohesion among visual elements, harmonizing them through the systems of spatial proportions and positioning logic it defines.
