Minor Project Brief

Consultation

10.09.2020 | Week 3
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
  • Other than feedback (mud card), what else can it do? If the purpose is only that, it will not go far.

  • Find reasons to create contents in this app

  • If this is catered to lecturers, we need to speak to lecturers from different schools to understand their needs for teaching and learning experience/to be able to cater to different teaching methods

  • Find a way  to make all these website either to be embedded or parked into this app that we want to create

  • For now we need to think of what we want to create first rather than being concern over whether it can be executed

  • Even though we are focusing on lecturers, it is also good to get feedbacks from students.

17.09.2020 | Week 4
Feedback given by Mr Mike and Dr Edwin:
  • Regarding the lists of websites that we have categorised, we might consider only having one website for each category. It is also important that we choose a tool that is the most powerful and free.

  • We are advised to look for a browser based version that is similar to the psych app.

  • The interview questions should be sent to Enna Ayub, the head of the elearning department at Taylor’s. Mr Mike suggests that she could help provide great insight on our current topic due to her experience in this field.

  • Prioritise the interview over the student surveys.

Next course of action

After finalizing the survey questions using google forms, we began sharing it among our classmates as well as students from other courses. We aim to receive at least 100 responses. At the same time, we are spreading the survey created by the Business team for lecturers.

We also sent an email to Ms Ayub regarding the interview.

24.09.2020 | Week 5
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
Survey interviews are completed with the help of the business EAP programme students. Next is the data analysis and summary report. The report should be discussed with the 2 other groups and the Problem Statement should be confirmed.

Next course of action
  • Sitemap and Information Architecture

  • Art Direction for the UI design

Group Proposal :

01.10.2020 | Week 6
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
We have to verify the sitemap with the IT team first. We are also advised to look at other similar apps and websites, break them down by user experience. To ensure the sitemap is usable, we have to make a prototype of it to make sure the navigation and functionality is clear. For the chosen font, we have to make sure that it is web friendly. We confirmed 3 keywords to focus on for the art direction.

Next course of action
  • Sitemap finalization from testing (1-1.5 weeks time)

  • Art Direction testing based on the 3 keywords (scientific, futuristic and geometrical)

  • Find out from the Business Team how the app will go to market?

08.10.2020 | Week 7
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
Shown draft wireframe design for lo-fi prototyping. But the sitemap has not been confirmed by the computing side. The sitemap will only be completed next week by the computing team. While waiting for that, the art direction should be the focus for the UI design and based on last week’s discussion, samples from top 10 best education app design should be analysed and all of the UI design elements should be picked out and form the new art direction. Also a Gantt Chart needs to be made to track all of the tasks for each team member from here on in.

Next course of action
  • Sitemap from computing team, then lo-fi prototyping in XD

  • Art direction

15.10.2020 | Week 8
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
No consultation this week.

Next course of action

  • Finished draft wireframe for Student app.
  • Received sitemaps from IT and proceeded with Low-fidelity wireframe.

22.10.2020 | Week 9
Feedback given by Mr Mike:
The app’s sitemap has been confirmed and the production could begin on wireframing. Advised to produce wireframes for XD and test the navigation, information placement and usability features. Prepare questions before testing and also record the user’s action as observations. While that is being tested, the art direction should begin and references based on top education apps need to be used as the benchmark. UI Design has been referenced and ready to be rationalized for design choices. Study UI design sets to better understand consistency and design functionality.

Next course of action
  • Wireframe and XD testing. Prepare questions and be ready to record user actions.

  • Reference top educational apps to inform the art direction choice

  • Study UI design sets for consistency and design functionality before proposing the UI designs.

29.10.2020 | Week 10
Feedback given by Mr Mike:

No Consultation this week.

Next course of action

  • Lecturer and admin websites’ low fidelity wireframes are completed

  • Student’s app and website low fidelity wireframe are to be completed

  • Art direction to be completed

  • Lecturer and admin websites high fidelity wireframe to be completed

  • 05.11.2020 | Week 11
    Feedback given by Mr Mike:
Shown progression in completing the wireframe designs for the lecturer and admin websites’ low fidelity interactive prototype. This prototype is ready for user-testing and is aimed to produce the test results by next Wednesday the latest. However, the student’s app and website’s low fidelity wireframe is incomplete and would need to be rushed for testing as soon as possible. The art direction was shown but was incomplete as well and would be done by the end of the week. Once completed, the art direction should be able to be used immediately after the user-testing results are back. The team has also been asked to consider how to promote and motivate users (lecturer and students) to download and use the app and website. What kinds of awareness and guidance will be made available to encourage the usage.

    Next course of action
    • Lecturer and admin websites’ low fidelity interactive prototype testing

    • Student’s app and website low fidelity wireframe interactive prototype testing

    • Art direction to be completed by end of the week

    • Consider and plan for awareness and guidance material to be produced

    12.11.2020 | Week 12
    Feedback given by Mr Mike:
All wireframe testings have been completed and could now proceed to final UI designs. However, the art direction has not been completed and will only be done early next week. The marketing and promotion direction has been set by the Business school students and will need the collaterals to be produced accordingly, namely event based designs, EDMs and social media contents.

    Next course of action
    • Complete the art direction

    • Final UI designs for the app and website

    19.11.2020 | Week 13
    Feedback given by Mr Mike:
The prototype designs for the student, lecturer and admin websites along with the app has been completed. All features and functionality has been done. The art direction has been shown the style is based on nordic minimalism, geometric shapes. While the curved edges for the entire UI design works well for all the websites and the app, the chosen geometry blocks as background aesthetics doesn't seem to work well. Advised to use finer or more elegant geometric representations such as points and lines. Even the Orbit logo could be stylized to have a version that is made of halftone-like points. The colour combination of the muted gray and white with the spot red and black contrast is good and really expresses the Nordic theme.

    Next course of action
    • Improve on the art direction

    • Complete the promotional collaterals and merchandises

    26.11.2020 | Week 14
    Feedback given by Mr Mike:
As mentioned last week by Mr Mike about the improvement of the background on the websites and app, we should have applied the art direction to the website and the promotional collaterals.

    Next course of action
    • Improve on the art direction

    • Complete the promotional collaterals and merchandises

    Reflection
    27.08.2020 | Week 1
We had our first meeting through Microsoft Teams and it was just a brief introduction on the module. We had our first physical class and Dr Edwin briefed us on the topics available for us to execute. We were to make a group among ourselves and choose a topic. I learnt that the IT students will have to continue this project next semester for their final.

    03.09.2020 | Week 2
The imbalance in specialisations among the teammates force us to switch out our initial teammates and we mix with other specialisations. After that, we began to discuss our topic and how we were to go about it.

    10.09.2020 | Week 3
We had our consultation in class , after getting feedback from Mr Mike, we started discussing how we can have different features on the app and website for both students and lecturers. We should just make a wish list of features and propose it to the IT team and discuss whether it is possible to execute for this project.

    17.09.2020 | Week 4
We came up with a google form survey to collect data from students regarding online learning tools and the overall online learning. We aim to get 100 responses from students. I sent out the google form survey as many times as can to friends and family.

    24.09.2020 | Week 5
After analysing the data from last week, we came to a conclusion for our website and app. We also collected data from the business team as they also did a similar google form survey.

    01.10.2020 | Week 6
We created our rough sitemap and verified it with the IT team. We also made sure to make it clear among ourselves on what a low fidelity and high fidelity wireframe should look like and also the process of UI and Ux Design, so that we know what to do next. I realised that the things that i learned from my extension Ux Design should be applied here so I also shared some of the UX design tips like “Mobile first design”.

    08.10.2020 | Week 7
While we were waiting for the sitemap from the IT team, we discussed how the art direction would roughly look like. We also referred to some references of existing apps and websites with similar art direction design.

    15.10.2020 | Week 8
We agreed on finalising the art direction after the low fidelity wireframe has been completed. And to curate the art direction whale doing the high fidelity at the same time. But for this week, we were still waiting for the sitemap from the IT team.

    22.10.2020 | Week 9
After receiving the sitemap and flowchart from the IT team, Daryl, Wen Yi and Izac began to work on the low fidelity wireframe on Adobe XD. While I work on discussing the art direction with Qaezie and Yip, we also discuss the Ux Design of the project.

    29.10.2020 | Week 10
There was no consultation this week, Daryl and Wen Yi kept us updated on their progress on the low fidelity wireframe and they managed to do it on time. The next step is to test it out and get feedback from the targeted consumers (students, lecturer and admin).

    05.11.2020 | Week 11
the low fidelity for the student app and website was not completed yet but we had to move on. Daryl and Wen Yi finished prototyping by linking the buttons on low fidelity in Adobe XD. After that we began user testing on both the admin website and lecturer website.

    12.11.2020 | Week 12
While waiting for the low fidelity for student app and website, we tested out the lecturer and admin website. For the Admin website Wen Yi discussed it with the IT team and got feedback for improvements from them, Daryl Interviewed a lecturer from a different faculty. Yip, Qaezie and I interviewed a lecturer from a different faculty too, and her feedback was good and clear. After receiving feedback from different individuals we compiled it and made changes to the low fidelity wireframe. After receiving the amended low fidelity wireframe, I started to work on the high fidelity for the Admin website on Adobe XD. I managed to finish the high fidelity admin website within the internal deadline, I felt very much accomplished. After that, I went and helped Yip on the student website and app as the low fidelity that we’ve received was not complete and all over the place, so we worked on re-doing the low fidelity and moved onto the high fidelity for the student app and website. While that was happening also we worked on the art direction of the project. We managed to finish most of the work within this week despite the delays with the low fidelity wireframe for the student app and website. I realised and learned that Adobe XD prototyping was not that difficult at all and we were able to also coedit on the same file. We had to rush all the high fidelity prototype and art direction before Thursday as the IT team needed it for their presentation.

    19.11.2020 | Week 13
After receiving feedback, we had to work on the art direction more as Mr Mike suggested some changes to improve the look of the Nordic style that we were going for. I also listed some things that we can do as our promotional collaterals and also some merchandise.

    26.11.2020 | Week 14
After receiving the final background design for the website I worked on adding it to the admin website and also helped on amending the student app background. We also compiled the presentation slides together on Adobe XD for submission.
